Rutherford Real Estate Information

A few miles north from Oakville one discovers Rutherford, another community defined by the locations of nearby wineries. The home of movie director Francis Ford Coppola's Neibaum-Coppola Winery and the Beaulieu Winery, Rutherford grows the world's finest cabernet grapes. It is vineyard land and many early Napa Valley settlers established their estates here, including Captain Neibaum who established Inglenook. Rutherford is positioned on rich soil--bottom land soil--located between the forest covered Mayacama Mountains to the west and the Howell Mountains to the east. Northward, Mt. St. Helena looms like a fortress guarding the valley. The Wappos--the Native Americans of the Napa Valley--called it "mountain with a soul." Southward the valley expands to Napa and the Bay Area wetlands. Rutherford's beginnings go back to the 1870s when the community was basically a train depot. Judge S. C. Hastings owned the vineyards in the area and is usually considered the founder.
