Calistoga Real Estate Information

Located at the head of the Napa Valley, Calistoga is a favorite spot for tourists. The rugged Palisades, ancient volcanic cliffs overlooking the Valley, lie to the east and the forested Mayacama Mountains flank the west. To the north, Mt. Calistoga's main street--Lincoln Avenue--is filled with shops and restaurants. Citizens consider Calistoga a walking town. Nearby is the Ben Sharptsteen Museum. Sharpsteen, a former Walt Disney animator and director, created the museum. Also, Sam Brannon's cottage, the oldest structure in the valley is located in town.

Sam Brannon founded Calistoga in the 1860s as the resort spot of the west. According to one story, Brannon wanted to name the town Saratoga, after the famous New York Resort town, but confused "California" with "Sartagoga." It's a story. Calistoga is famous for its hot springs, mineral baths, and mud baths.

Many of the older homes in Calistoga were once summer or week-end homes, but newer homes are continually Calistoga City Hall--click for a larger photographbeing constructed. Calistoga has three mobile home parks. You might find a home in town but there are also many fine home in the hills to the east and west.

The town is a friendly community with its own volunteer fire department and police department. See below for links. It is also the location for the Napa County Fair.

Services and Shopping Shopping in town is available--food stores, clothing stores, and hardware stores. A 30 minute drive to Santa Rosa or Napa will take you to large shopping malls and chain stores. Safeway is conveniently located in St. Helena, only 8 miles away.

Lincoln avenue is lined with small shops. The Ace hardware store is conveniently located. Banks, pharmacies, and bookstores are found in Calistoga. A full service post office is located on Washington.

Calistoga has its own police department. The department also has its own website--Calistoga Police. Calistoga has a volunteer fire department and a full time fire chief. Calistoga Fire Department. The Calistoga Public Library offers a fine selection for pleasure reading and research.

Entertainment See our Adventures--a Napa County Guided Tour for more information. The nearest movie theater is located in St. Helena--The Cameo. Larger theaters are in Napa and Santa Rosa, offering a decent selection of newly released films. Calistoga has city parks and playgrounds for picnics. The Napa County Fair takes place in Calistoga every year around the 4th of July. Sprint Car racing and the annual Napa Valley Classic also take place at the fairgrounds.

Did You Know?

The Calistoga Depot is the second oldest train depot in California still in existence. While trains no longer come here, the Depot is still a place to visit, filled with shops and restaurants.
