Napa Valley and County communities extend from the southern most city of American Canyon to the northern most community of Berryessa Estates, a distance of about 60 miles. Each community has its own flavor. While none of our communities are what one would call a big city, some are more urban than others. Some are "out in the sticks," and require a long drive for supplies. But some people like that.
Napa County includes more than Napa Valley. Within the county borders are found other valleys--Pope, Snell, Wooden, Gordon, and Chiles. Lake Berryessa, once known as the Berryessa Valley, lies to the east. Canyons, meadows, and mountains all add to the various landscapes found in Napa Valley.
The climate varies throughout the county. The southern communities, near the San Francisco Bay, experience cooler temperatures due to the San Francisco Bay fogs and breezes, while the northern communities tend to be dryer and hotter. The mountains in the north part of Napa Valley are shaded with forests of conifers and oaks while the southern hills of Napa Valley tend to be open, covered with golden grass and oaks. The valley itself is flat and open. In the northern parts of the county one finds rocky terrain of hills and steep canyons, sparsely covered with shrubs, oaks, and fire-cone pines due to the volcanic soil of the area.
Community sizes vary from Napa, population 61,842, with its midsize town atmosphere, to Pope Valley, with is country atmosphere.
